Rotary Clubs Join Forces for Annual Charity

On Thursday, 22nd January, the Olympia Exhibition Centre in West Kensington hosted the conclusion of the annual four-day Toy Fair. The event culminated in a "Trolley Dash" organised for the children’s charity, Kids In Mind. This initiative, reminiscent of a "supermarket sweep," involves volunteers racing against the clock to collect toy donations from various exhibitor stands across the venue.

The event saw a significant collaborative effort from Rotary International, with 51 volunteers participating from both District 1260 and District 1070. Within District 1260, the Brookmans Park, Hertswood, and Welwyn Garden City Rotary Clubs were well represented, working alongside a team of enthusiastic volunteers from the law firm Mills & Reeve.

Logistics and Corporate Support

The scale of the operation required substantial logistical support from several major partners. Tesco provided over 40 trolleys to facilitate the rapid collection of items across the exhibition hall. To ensure the donations could be transported effectively, Marks & Spencer provided a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) along with a qualified driver to move the collected goods.

By the end of the dash, the team had collected over 6,000 toys, with the final count expected to rise as the donations are processed.

Supporting Children in Need

The toys collected during the event are managed by Kids In Mind, a charity dedicated to supporting children escaping domestic abuse. These children, who are often relocated to staffed women’s refuges with their mothers, are provided with bespoke toy boxes. This service operates nationwide across England and Scotland, offering children a sense of comfort and a gift of their own during a period of significant upheaval.
