Community: Sue Ryder Fireworks

We serve 800 Hot Dogs in 2 hours!

Reading Abbey entered into the community spirit serving Hot Dogs, soup and water  at the Fireworks Display at the Sue Ryder home in Nettlebed. Full event details on the Sue Ryder website (here).

Now, having helped myself to a few, I think the term "Hot Dog" really doesn't do the catering any justice. These were premium sausages that Jamie Oliver would have been proud of. Nicely caramelised onions (a hint of Balsamic?) and the obligatory ketchup and mustard.

It was a slow start with a fine drizzle from 5pm, but things soon picked up. The children were dressed up for the Halloween parade and there were some pretty spooky outfits and painted faces. There was even an Imperial Storm Trooper (perhaps a little too tall?) wandering around.

Serving 800 Hot Dogs is not to be taken lightly and Reading Abbey are old hands at this. A production line system kept the punters moving along the different stations from payment to soup, to sausages, onions and finally ketchup. The engine room in the kitchen pre-cooking sausages before they were finished on the BBQ and loaded in buns.... just in time for hungry customers.

Great job and great fun.
