One of the highest honours that can be bestowed by Rotary is the Paul Harris Fellowship, an award created in 1957 and named after Paul Harris, who founded the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905. The Fellowship recognises outstanding individuals, both Rotarians and non-Rotarians, whose dedication to community service and leadership exemplifies Rotary's enduring motto, "Service Above Self."
It is therefore with great pleasure that Newbury Rotary Club announces the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Les Osmond.
The presentation was made by Julian Dickins during the club's quiz night, in the presence of Les's family, fellow club members and friends.
While many recipients are recognised for highly visible achievements, Les is someone who has never sought the limelight. Since joining Newbury Rotary from another club, he has consistently demonstrated a quiet determination and commitment to service that has made a lasting impact on both the club and the wider community.
Les has played a leading role in organising and delivering several major fundraising events, including the club's popular Quiz Nights and Boules in the Square. Combining humour, diligence and unwavering reliability, he is the type of member who simply gets on with the job and ensures things get done.
His leadership was particularly evident during the Covid pandemic. As Club President at one of the most challenging periods in the club's history, Les guided Newbury Rotary through unprecedented circumstances. With meetings moving online and many traditional activities disrupted, he helped keep the club united and active through regular Zoom meetings and continued engagement with members. His patience, determination and calm leadership were instrumental in maintaining the club's strength during a difficult time.
More recently, Les once again stepped forward when needed, taking on the role of President for a further four months last year. It was another demonstration of his willingness to serve and his commitment to supporting the club whenever required.
In every respect, Les embodies the values of Rotary and the ideal of Service Above Self. His dedication, leadership and selfless contribution to Newbury Rotary Club make him a thoroughly deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.
Our wholehearted congratulations go to Les on receiving this well-deserved Paul Harris Fellowship.
