Nepal Labdur Project
We're contributing £5000 to a Water and Sanitation project in Nepal, lead by Elgin Rotary.
Over 40 clubs have so far become involved from District 1010 and in partnership with NEWAH (Nepal Water for Health Group) and a number of local Nepali Rotary clubs since 2003. A significant number or projects have been completed in Nepalgunj, Laxmipur, Nepane, Simle, Bethanchowk, Khades and Bhaja and Majahatar Tultha.
These projects typically include the drilling of tubewells, installation of standing taps, construction of purpose-built latrines and washing facilities, as well as holding tanks. Many of these are in villages that before had no running water and required inhabitants to walk sometimes for hours to access water from rivers. Often this water was itself unsafe and a major cause of infant mortality. Also covered in these activities was to improve sanitation and water access in schools.
A significant benefit from all these projects was not just improved mortality and health but the enablement of better crop farming and fresher foods.
One major cause of the need for much of this was a series of earthquakes in 2018.
By 2024 Rotary Elgin with the Rotary Club of Bhouda identified a new project requirement in Labdur Khola, in an area 160 miles east of Katmandu with over 1709 people in 175 households. The goal was to raise £20,000 (which has since been achieved) and in cooperation with Newah and the Bhouda Rotary Club to undertake the project.
Similar to other projects within the same scope in Nepal, this will consist of tubewells, a standpipe and tap for all residences and more, reconditioning and construction of hygienic latrines and an associated health and hygiene programme.
