I felt greatly for our guest speaker, Richard Stahl who, on any other night, would have been the star turn of the meeting - his presentation about mining disasters and how to prevent them recurring was genuinely very interesting. To complement it he ran a couple of movies of when ore mine spoil sites failed catastrophically failed leading, in one case, to the deaths of hundreds in Brazil.
Unfortunately for him his talk was preceded by the award of Paul Harris Fellowships to two of our own - Neil Hufton and Les Worthington so I hope that he had been warned that his role that night was similar to that of the chap with the broom and shovel after the horseguards.
