Regrettably the leader for the trip had to cry off due to family matters, so another Brummie, President Neil toook over a walking tour of England's second city before the trip to the Hippodrome.
He writes,
"I think you could say that the Christmas event this year was somewhat different:
- A train ride to Birmingham that was remarkably cheap and convenient. We discovered that not all trains stop at Long Buckby!
- A walking tour of the centre of Birmingham led by the president that apparently was quite informative. Most of the 14 who braved the unseasonable weather were surprised how compact and accessible was the centre and how much it had to offer. The orientation included the Christmas market, Art Gallery, the new library, Cathedral, International Convention Centre, the NIA, canal area ,Brindley place and The Mailbox.
- A surprisingly good lunch at the Tap and Spile by the canal rounded off the morning. It worked quite well once we managed to find each other - herding geese comes to mind!
- A world class performance of the Nutcracker by the Bham Royal Ballet was like watching a series of moving Christmas cards.
- A Japanese meal that was a theatrical performance in its own right (and the food was quite good as well.)
