Club's Social Group visit to The Welney Wetland Centre

.

A Pied Avocet - one of the many amazing birds seen during our visit

On 16 April 2026 a group of 14 Rotarians and partners enjoyed an interesting morning being shown round Welney Wetland Centre near Littleport in Norfolk. The weather was cloudy but dry – ideal for walking.

Lead by expert guide Tony and his colleague Dave,

The Group watched large numbers of wildfowl feeding in the lagoons, viewed from the main Observatory and two smaller hides. The story of the Ouse Washes and this particular reserve was explained with candour and humour.

The team heard the songs of wrens, sedge warblers and Cetti’s warblers, and saw scores of Black-tailed Godwits, for which the reserve has a special project to help build their numbers. Amongst many ducks, geese and waders, some special sightings were of Avocets, a Great White Egret, and a Marsh Harrier.

The day finished with a snack lunch in the Wigeon café, and the group returned home in the early afternoon after a great day Welney Wetland Centre
