Thank You from The Nepal Trust

for Sponsoring our "Little Doctor's"Education Programme in Sarkegard School, Humla District, in the "Hidden Himalayas", Nepal.

The Nepal Trust Little Doctors programme is a community health education initiative that trains school children to become "Little Doctors".

These children then spread knowledge about personal hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, first aid, and disease prevention to their families and communities, creating a wider awareness of healthcare fundamentals. Supported by teachers and the Nepal Trust's health staff, the program aims to improve community health, particularly in remote areas like the Humla district, and has been running for over 20 years.

How it works

Training: School teachers, supported by healthcare staff from the Nepal Trust, train local school children to be "Little Doctors".
Curriculum: The training covers a range of health topics, including personal hygiene, family planning, diseases, sanitation, first aid, and nutrition.
Community impact: Once trained, the "Little Doctors" educate their own families and friends about these health practices.

Goals and achievements

Goal: To raise health awareness within communities by using children as a vehicle for change.
Impact: The program has been very effective in improving health outcomes. For example, between 2014 and 2016, the incidence of respiratory and stomach complaints in the target area more than halved.
Scale: The Nepal Trust has trained over 1,000 "Little Doctors" from more than 20 different villages.

Program context

Location: The program is a key initiative of the Nepal Trust, particularly in the remote and impoverished Humla district, which lacks road access and has limited infrastructure.
Integration: The "Little Doctors" program is part of a broader set of projects by the Nepal Trust that includes renewable energy, smokeless stoves, and income-generation to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the community.
