The Winners - The Axe & Compass Quiz Team

On Thursday March 28th the Rotary Club of St Ives, supported by friends and Rotary colleagues, and sponsored by Peter Lane Estate Agents, hosted another superb Charity Pub Quiz, raising around £3,200 for charitable causes near and far.

Just over 700 quizzers took part, spread around 38 pubs and clubs across Cambridgeshire, and as usual the rivalry was fierce, and the fun was plentiful! The pub with the largest team was once again The Three Horseshoes at Wistow, with a magnificent 51 people in their team. They won £200 which will go to The Malcolm Whales Foundation, a fundraising cancer charity. Congratulations to The Anchor Inn at Wimblington who had 42 quizzers, and several others who were in the thirties.

The winners, with a jaw-dropping 191 points from 195 questions, were The Axe and Compass at Hemingford Abbots; rumour has it that they had a question-writer for University Challenge on their team! Not only did they win £300 for their chosen charity, Brain Tumour Research, but a donor (who prefers to remain anonymous) is going to match that with another £300; good work team! Our sponsors, Peter Lane, have also provided 12 bottles of wine for the winners.

In 2nd place and winning £200 to be divided between their 2 charities, Dementia UK and Marie Curie, were Lakeside Lodge Golf Club. They also receive 6 bottles of wine. The full list of remaining prize winners is as follows: –

Many thanks go to the Rotarians and friends who give their time to write the questions and be quizmasters on the night, as well as those who man ‘Quiz Control’ and process all the scores; another 50 or so people that have helped to raise a further £3,200 – or more – for charity. In total this twice-yearly Quiz has now raised around £70,000 over the years!

Our next Quiz will be held on Thursday, October 3rd; please put the date in your diary. If you’d like to find out any more about how you can take part, or you would like to volunteer to support Rotary St Ives in their fundraising, please contact Sandra King at sking@stivesrotarycambs.org.uk
