Rotary Walk
Thursday 19 April 2018
Leave from “Red Lion”
36 Bridle Path, Brafield on Green, Northampton NN7 1BP

The walk this month will be from The Red Lion at Brafield and venture in the direction of Little Houghton before returning in a circuitous route to our starting point – now there’s a novelty!!
Please assemble between 10.15 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. for a prompt start. As I have stepped in at short notice I have not yet done a trial run but, from the car, fields are in evidence and if the rain persists during the month I would recommend some good walking boots. We shall, of course, welcome additional guests for lunch as usual.

Thursday dawned sunny and warm, being the middle one of the three summer days that arrived in April. The merry band of walkers assembled in the car park suitably attired in summer gear with hats and sunscreen, spirits buoyed by the early taste of summer. Walkmeister Philip welcomed our newest member Neil and introduced him to his fellow walkers, before launching into the obligatory elf and safety warnings of the various perils we were likely to encounter.
And so we set off, and immediately had to navigate the busy A428, which we managed without incident, and proceeded around the fields in the general direction of Great Houghton. Fortunately, the recent warm weather had dried out the footpaths sufficiently to make them reasonably passable although there were a few areas to remind us of how bad it could have been.
We eventually arrived at the driveway to Little Houghton Lodge which led us back to the A428, which we again successfully crossed and then onwards into Little Houghton village and The Four Pears pub. Here Philip had arranged for us to have a coffee, a midway break which is becoming a regular and popular feature of recent walks. Philip generously pick up the tab and we were soon on our way, if a little reluctantly bby some, out of the village and back across the fields to Brafield.
At the Red Lion we were joined by the lunchers and Philip presented the walker of the month award to Neil, in the hope that it would encourage him to join us on the May walk. The same strategy had been used on the previous walk when the winner was Caroline Bull. Unfortunately, she was unable to be with us and had entrusted the trophy to Philip’s safe keeping. Sadly, he forgot to bring it and promised to deliver it the next day.
