Leave from the “Rose & Crown”
Yardley Hastings, NN7 1EX

This month’s walk is from the “Rose & Crown” at Yardley Hastings. It’s a three mile walk, taking in the views of the village and of Castle Ashby. There are two possible walks, and I will decide which nearer the date, when I have done the recce.
Meet as usual at 10.15 for a 10.30-ish start.
Graham Mortimer.
WALK REPORT
Nine of us started from the Rose and Crown in Yardley Hastings, having heard the usual “elf and safety remarks from our leader, Graham. Walking through the village, most of us were surprised its size and number of old houses and other fine buildings. Graham had certainly organised a superb walk, but it soon became apparent that it would be taxing for those of us who attended the Kids Out the previous day!
The weather was wonderful, as was the scenery as we walked through some beautiful countryside, ensuring we missed the cow pats and sheep droppings, of which there were many.
We followed the footpath into the beautiful grounds of Castle Ashby, which we could see in the distance up the long drive. No matter how many times one sees it; it always strikes one as magnificent building.
Having recently been injured Kevin decided to take a rest and miss out the final loop of the walk so remained at the spot we’d reach on our return. Apparently he struck up a relationship with a sheep and sat talking to it, whilst we continued our circular tour. He was still there when we returned and told us that he had had a somewhat woolly conversation.
Arriving back in Yardley Hastings, from a different direction, we were amazed to find a full sized statue of a giraffe in one of the gardens. A distinct one up on the ubiquitous gnomes!
We all enjoyed the meal at the pub, which was very good, but somewhat overshadowed by Ann Mortimer suffering a nasty fall, which resulted in badly bruised and painful knees. I understand from Graham that she is recovering well, helped one hopes by the fact that she was awarded the WotM trophy for bravery in adversity. When Kevin presented it to her she said that it was one she had always coveted, as it was such a magnificent trophy and truly one that recognised real walkers!
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
