Rotary Walk
Thursday, 20th April
After some early rain the ten or twelve (I was never very good at maths!) members or partners, who arrived in the car park of the Windhover pub in Kingsthorpe were well wrapped up, but fortune favoured the brave as it turned out to be a beautiful Spring morning for Kevin’s jaunt in the environs of Boughton.
After ‘Elf and Safety’, which included two low stiles and a hazardous crossing of the A508 to enter Boughton Hall Park, we set off in high spirits along the old railway line towards Market Harborough. Thankfully, and surprisingly to most of us, we soon encountered a wonderful footpath through a wood and gently inclined towards the A508 and Boughton. On the way we passed Boughton Grange, some well-kept pastures and some wonderful views along the valley. Having lived in Pitsford for sixteen years I have to say that all of these discoveries were completely new to me, and a real delight on our door step.
Having made our hazardous passage across the A508, of which we had been warned (and it was!!), we entered Boughton Hall Park beside the Hawking Tower and walked on past the house and cricket ground towards the village. At this point our orders were taken for tea, coffee or chocolate by Kevin and phoned through to Sue, who was awaiting us in their lovely garden on the other side of the village. This made a splendid interlude on our walk and was much appreciated by all.
Fully refreshed we continued around Boughton, through woodland, stopping for the obligatory photo on what was the nearest construction we could find for a bridge, pausing at the Obelisk and then back to the roundabout to take us past the new housing development and down the hill to the Windhover for a convivial lunch and some liquid refreshment.
Not only did we have the President and Elizabeth with us but a plethora of other unaccompanied ladies including Margaret Jones whom we are always pleased to see. Last month’s trophy winner, Loredana Harley, was inspirational with her choice of recipient this month in choosing someone not even on the walk, Sue Greatorex, for her kindness in looking after us with refreshments and her choice was warmly welcomed by all. Kevin and Sue had given us all a wonderful walk with lots of interest and a good pub lunch to round it all off.
