Evening Fish & Chip Supper at Pitsford Resevoir

 "Conservation Talk at Pitsford"

 
It could have been called "Pitsford by the Sea", we had the water, a wonderful sunset on a very pleasant summer evening but the water was very fresh, and so was the talk on the conservation projects being undertaken at Pitsford Reservoir Nature Area.

Normally Monday evening meetings are poorly attended, not so on July 29th.  A full house of 43 attended on a warm balmy evening to listen to Sarah, a Senior Warden at Pitsford, explain the various projects that are being undertaken.  These, together with the on going general maintenance of the Flora and Fauna help to increase the variety and numbers of wild birds, water fowl and plants in and around the nature area of Pitsford Reservoir.

These were all helped by our own Bird Hide (The Goosander Hide) and the Tern Island that we built some years ago and the numbers of both resident and visiting birds have increased since that time.  Sarah explained how the weather variations throughout the seasons have an impact on both the breeding, migration and the numbers of new comers to the lake.

Mishna then continued the conservation and sustainability theme but in the Moth world.  Who would have thought that there were  over 2000 species of moths in the UK.  These and Butterflies belong to the order of species called Lepidoptera.  We associate pretty  and stunning colours with only Butterflies but moths are not all brown and have wonderful colours and markings, which Mishna and Sarah showed us in sample files as we sat and ate our Fish and Chips, kindly delivered from the Brixworth Chippy by Richard and Joyce, together with some alcoholic/(some non) beverage.

All this, and true Rotary fellowship on the grassy banks of the reservoir watching the sun go down.  A really good evening and a big thank you to Sarah and Mishna, and off course to David George for arranging the event.
