Whilst the sun may not always shine on the righteous, it deservedly shone for most of the day on those 20 Rotarians (righteous or otherwise) and partners who celebrated the 150th Rotary Walk in style on the 20th August at Ringstead and Stanwick Lakes. A less taxing perambulation than some, nevertheless, under the firm direction of our own personal Baedecker, - John Evitt, it provided a varied and scenic tour of the area, despite some disappointment from the more athletic of the group that the adventure playground was not, perhaps wisely, included in the itinerary!
The walk itself, through very attractive scenery which was largely unknown to many of us, was largely uneventful, no amorous cows or impossible stiles, and despite encouragement, the disaster-prone amongst us could neither be induced to fall off the plank they all navigated so adroitly nor take an early bath in the Lake, so nothing newsworthy to report there!
A really excellent lunch at the Axe and Compass followed, accompanied by a resume from Gethin of the history of the Walks from their inception in 1996 with 9 participants, including himself, Margaret, and Chris Mahony. Of these 150 walks exceptional attendance records of over 120 each had been achieved by Gethin and Chris, closely followed by John Allen and Desmond Keohane, who were also present.
Reverting to the original structure of the Walks, those fit and hardy or wishing to expiate for their lunchtime over-indulgence took the opportunity of a rather shorter stroll round one of the smaller Lakes in the afternoon, before being treated to an afternoon cup of tea or equivalent by President Lesley, whose attendance on this auspicious occasion was accordingly gratefully acknowledged, as was her role as official photographer to the Expedition; - the results of her efforts now appearing above.
Cakes in the afternoon were however considered one bridge too far, but the whole event certainly represented a most enjoyable day!
