Our speaker this evening was Anne Thomas, who previously served as a lecturer and educationalist in both the private and public sectors. Over the years, she developed a deep admiration for Agatha Christie and her ability to draw on her life experiences in her storytelling. Christie discovered a narrative approach that enabled her to create compelling central characters and craft storylines that resonated with readers.
She explored Agatha Christie’s early years and her journey in creating and developing her renowned detective, Hercule Poirot, alongside Captain Arthur Hastings. First introduced in Christie’s debut novel, Hastings emerged as Poirot’s loyal friend, companion, and chronicler, guiding readers through their thrilling adventures. Christie travelled extensively and constantly made notes about the places she visited and the things she observed. These notes formed a significant framework for her stories.
Christie authored 66 detective novels, and her most famous work, And Then There Were None, has achieved remarkable success, selling over 100 million copies worldwide.
It was an excellent talk. It was a shame that a thunderstorm arrived about halfway through, but it was altogether a very interesting presentation.
