Our Guest speaker this evening was Laurinda Luffman from RSPB who gave a very interesting talk about the Common Swift (Apus apus) which is a marvel of the natural world, a bird designed almost exclusively for life in the air. Known for its, sickle-shaped wings and high-pitched screaming calls, the swift spends nearly its entire life on the wing, rarely touching the ground except to nest. They are the fastest birds in level flight, reaching speeds of nearly 70 mph.Their migrations between UK and South Africa are some of the farthest journeys made by any bird.
Unfortunately their numbers are dwindling and Laurinda encouraged all those present to consider installing Swift nest boxes on homes and garages to encourage the bird numbers.

President Michael thanked Laurinda for a very interesting and informative presentation
