Amanda Marlow, Mayor of Milton Keynes in 2022/2023 gave a comprehensive account of her busy time in office with visits and speeches delivered at up to 7 events in a single day! Her talk was followed by a short film showing some of the most important events including the 2023 visit to the city by King Charles.
Milton Keynes was founded on 23 January 1967 under the Government of Harold Wilson with the aim to relieve the housing pressure in London and with a designated area of 89 square kilometres. The current diverse population is 280,000 and increasing. This year has seen a proposal to build 63,000 new houses in and around the city. Milton Keynes was named a city to mark Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee on 20 May 2022, a 4th attempt having applied unsuccessfully in 2000, in 2002 for the Golden Jubilee and in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee and was made official by the attendance of King Charles in 2023.
Many firms have established bases in the area; notably Red Bull Racing team, winner of multiple Formula 1 manufacturer's championships. Stadium MK is the home of Milton Keynes Dons Football Club, has a capacity of 30,000 and hosted several matches during the UEFA Women's Euro 2022. The stadium occasionally hosts rugby union and also hosts music concerts with artists such as Rod Stewart.
A raffle for the Mayor's chosen charities - MK SNAP (Special Needs Advancement Project) and Medical Detection Dogs raised over £85,000.
Since her Mayoral year Amanda has ceased to be a Conservative councillor and now works for a company involved with artificial intelligence. When asked by the President if she would take on the post of mayor a second time she answered very clearly "No
