Bob Ricketts OBE gives an insight to the recent history of Bedford

We were delighted to welcome Bob Ricketts OBE, who gave an excellent talk about Bedford in the 1950's. Bob talked about the housing crisis in Bedford after the Second World War, also he discussed the immigrants who came to Bedford, settled here, ran businesses and integrated in the community, He then talked about the new high rise flats, new bus station, multi story carparks needed to support Bedford's populations growth.

Bob noted how our town initially was full of heavy industry but over the years many of these companies have disappeared

Finally it was nostalgic to see photographs of Bedford High Street full of shoppers visiting EP Rose, Braggins, M&S and many of the small family businesses that no longer exist.

The Rotary members and guests were reminded to capture many of our own personal stories when growing up and to ensure they are not forgotten.
An excellent talk by Bob, it was very much appreciated.
