We have finally found a site for a permanent memorial to the Rotary Club of Meriden’s founder President, Cliff Whitney. Cliff was one of the driving forces that established the Rotary Club of Meriden. He worked tirelessly to recruit enough members from the surrounding areas for the club to be chartered, and then continue to grow further. The lives of all members have been shaped by his efforts and subsequently many people and organisations have benefited as a result.
A commemorative tree was planted in the early 2000’s close to his home in Balsall Common, but unfortunately a few years later it was vandalised. A replacement tree was subsequently planted close by, but a few years later that died. Since then, we had been looking for a site that would be more safe and secure. The Manor Hotel, which is where the club meets since it was formed in 1979, have kindly agreed that one of their established trees in the well-maintained front garden could be used as a commemorative tree and the plaque from the original tree has been placed by it as a permanent memorial.
