Occasionally we have speakers come along to our Club who inspire us to take action and we were delighted to welcome Davy Chilakalaka, the founder of the Kasupe Charity in Malawi.
Davy, who was born in Malawi, explained that as a child, he used to have to walk many miles to school and life was hard, but he considered himself more fortunate than others. Unable to be supported into higher education by his family, he was lucky enough to be offered a scholarship in the UK by a church organisation and studied Accountancy.
Several years later, with his wife Sally, he founded the Kasupe Charity and they strive to improve the lives of others by creating opportunities in education and beyond. We were so inspired and, as education is one of the seven Rotary Areas of Focus, we applied for District Grants over two years to help purchase desks for the Primary School the Kasupe Charity began several years ago.
The difference the desks have made is amazing and not only helps their own pupils but two other primary schools in the area (81 candidates) will use Kasupe St Cyprian's Primary School to write their Primary school leaving certificate PSLC. This will help the founders drive towards making their school a Centre of Excellence.
Another positive from receiving the desks is that they are able to carry out repairs to their old desks too!
Kasupe's aim is provide desks for the whole school, not just those sitting exams, so we were delighted to have made a difference.
