Elgin Parkrun - Debbie Main and Paul Hughes

Thursday 27 July

Debbie Main and Paul Hughes gave an enthusiastic presentation on the history and background to the Elgin Parkrun at which they are volunteer Race Directors.  Held at Cooper Park, Elgin every Saturday morning at 0930 the event comprises a 5k run for Adults and 2k run for Juniors and is free to enter.

First established in 2004 Park runs are held in 26 countries of the world, the first held in Scotland in 2008 and Elgin Parkrun was started in 2016.  With an average of over 150 runners each Saturday the Elgin Parkrun is well established and supported by runners of all abilities.  Many visitors to the Moray area also participate.

As well as the benefit of increased fitness and physical wellbeing participation in the Parkrun is also good for the mental health of many people.

Like many activities the Parkrun relies on volunteers especially for marshalling duties.  With a minimum number required at each event to date no runs have been cancelled due to a lack of volunteers but it has been close!  More runners and volunteers are always welcome.

The commitment given to the Elgin Parkrun by Debbie and Paul was recently recognised by them being voted Moray’s Volunteer of the Year an award richly deserved.
