The annual Rotary Youth Speaks competition provides an engaging platform for secondary school students to develop and demonstrate their public speaking, teamwork and critical thinking skills.
Typically hosted at venues such as Whitby School, the event brings together student teams who present and debate topical issues, delivering structured speeches that reflect research, balanced argument and confident communication.
Each team works collaboratively, with speakers taking on defined roles to build and present a cohesive case. Participants are encouraged to explore complex subjects, express informed opinions and respond thoughtfully to differing perspectives, all within a supportive and respectful environment.
An experienced panel of adjudicators, often drawn from education and related fields, provides constructive feedback to help students refine their skills and grow in confidence. Awards are presented for both team performance and outstanding individual speakers, recognising clarity of thought, delivery and engagement.
Organisers consistently commend participants for their maturity, preparation and willingness to take on challenging topics. The competition offers valuable experience that supports personal development and builds skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
With each year’s event building on the last, Rotary Youth Speaks remains a valued fixture in the local calendar, encouraging young people to find their voice and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
