NYMR and Pickering Rotary Club join forces for memorable days out

We have collaborated once again with NYMR to deliver a series of special excursions for adults from organisations such as Mencap, MS Society, Next Steps and Sight Support

Over three days - 7th, 9th, and 11th October - around 60 visitors per day enjoyed a memorable experience on the historic railway, with the support of dedicated volunteers from both the NYMR and the Rotary Club.

Guests travelled from Pickering to Grosmont onboard accessible carriages that were specially reserved for the occasion. Upon arrival, they were treated to tea and coffee in a marquee at Grosmont, with a Botham’s packed-lunch which was generously part-funded by Pickering Rotary Club.

The day also included small group escorted visits to the public areas around the Motive Power Depot (MPD) for those interested in seeing behind the scenes workings of the heritage railway.

Michelle Baggaley, Community Engagement Manager at the NYMR, said: “It was wonderful to see how the combination of the scenic journey and hands-on support from both our volunteers and the Pickering Rotary Club brought so much joy to our guests. The partnership between NYMR and Pickering Rotary Club is a shining example of community spirit and inclusivity, bringing together organisations and volunteers with the shared goal of enriching the lives of local residents."

Pickering Rotary, established in 1965, is known for its long-standing dedication to supporting local causes, both financially and through hands-on involvement. The club has approximately 30 active members and consistently responds to community needs.

John Fields from Pickering Rotary Club, added: “Pickering Rotary Club are delighted to provide days out once again to many of our local charitable organisations. We would like to say a big thank you to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, as without their generous support we would not be able to offer such opportunities. The railway’s commitment to the community echoes that of the Pickering Rotary Club.

I have received such a positive response and many messages to say how valuable such opportunities are to service users. It is always heartening to see and hear the impact such events have. As we continue to provide these special days out, we look forward to touching the lives of many more individuals in the community, spreading joy and a sense of togetherness that is truly priceless. If you would like to know more about the work that we do, please get in touch.”

Gena Douglas, MS Society York and Ryedale District Social Events Organiser, passed on the following comments from the MS Society York and District Group:

Alison and Paul: “Thank you for a lovely day, a first trip on a steam train for myself and my husband.”

Claire: “Thank you so much for an enjoyable day, it’s much appreciated.”

Gena also included: “All the group had a fabulous time, the Botham’s Picnic was a real treat. Some members would never have been able to make such a journey without the help of NYMR Volunteers, Staff and the Rotary Club members. On behalf of the 20 in our group I would like to pass on all our thanks for a wonderful day out to Grosmont.”
