Tiel Rotary Visit to Plant Tulip Bulbs

Sat, Oct 13th 2018 at 9:00 am - 11:00 pm

Five of our friends from Tiel Rotary Club visited this weekend to help plant some of the 1000 End Polio Now Tulip Bulbs in the Abbey Gardens

Over 700 specially developed tulip bulbs, donated by the Rotary Club of Tiel-Waalstreek in the Netherlands, were planted in the Abbey Gardens on Saturday. Rotarians from the Dutch Club in Tiel worked alongside their colleagues from Bury Abbey Rotary Club and members of the Abbey Gardens Friends group, to plant a long swathe of tulips, near the north wall of the garden.

The tulips are part of a worldwide Rotary campaign to eradicate polio and are sold in aid of the charity “End Polio Now”. The Dutch Rotarians purchased the bulbs, which they gave to the town of Bury St Edmunds, to celebrate the friendship of the two Rotary Clubs and promote the “End Polio Now” cause.

Thanks to the Rangers team in the Abbey Gardens, the Friends of the Abbey Gardens group and Bury in Bloom for their invaluable assistance with the project.

Everyone can now look forward to seeing the bright and beautiful flowers next spring and be reminded how close we are to eradicating polio, in 2018 there have been less than 20 reported cases worldwide and this figure is falling every year, this is thanks to the long-term effort of campaigns such as the Rotary End Polio Now campaign.
