Bridgescapes - Bruce Keith

Tue, Nov 16th 2021 at 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Bruce Keith the author of a detailed book on historic bridges in Scotland, will give us a fascinating, illustrated insight into this topic. He will also sign copies of his books.

Bruce Keith is a retired Scot with a keen interest in Scottish history and in promoting Scotland's rich heritage and the achievements of its people.

In October 2017 he wrote and published a book, Bridgescapes which he thought may well be of interest to members of our Rotary Club.

With the opening of the Queensferry Crossing in 2017, it is apposite to celebrate the long and illustrious history of bridges within Scotland and the contribution Scottish engineers have made to bridges around the globe. Many of these are not only significant engineering achievements, they also make a major statement in terms of architectural design and form part of Scotland's cultural, historic and landscape heritage. Bruce plans to tailor his talk to include bridges, viaducts and aqueducts and characters local to Crieff.  Many of the iconic bridges in Perthshire are featured in Bridgescapes

Bridgescapes is a personal journey through history, celebrating Scotland’s bridge building heritage. It is primarily aimed at promoting Scotland and intended for those with an interest in Scottish history and geography -its people and its landscape. It is not an engineering book, per se, nor is it intended solely for ‘anoraks’!

Bridgescapes is amply illustrated by a young Scottish photographer, Lewis Matheson, supplemented by archive material. Woven throughout the text is Bruce's own personal and professional journey. Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has kindly contributed the Foreword.

Bruce's aim is to be interesting, informative and entertaining and to illustrate his talk with several of the images from his book. He has indicated that he would be happy to sign copies afterwards.
