The 4 main tenets of Saltergate are: -
1. Each child must be looked after by family member.
2. The organisation is not an orphanage but rather a support system for children to remain in some form of family unit.
3. Those helped must work to independence.
4. Every penny the charity raises goes to children. Any running costs are met by Kevin and the other trustees personally.
Initially the charity concentrated purely on ensuring the children were fed, dressed and schooled. It still does this and has more than 220 children being supported but more recently it has also admistered a micro-loan scheme on behalf of Bradford Blaize. This allows the families looking after some of the children to be self supporting by financing business ventures through small loans. Projects have included the likes of shops, beauty salons, sewing machines, agriculture and other projects. The loans are made interest free with a view to them being repaid within 12 to 18 months on average. The repayments are then recycled into further loans.
The photographs show some of the recent successes of the charity.
