Derek luckily picked one of the few sunny days of the summer for us to meet at Ilkley Bowling Club for a crown green bowling tournament. Unfortunately turnout was limited so it turned more into a friendly match than a tournament. Only 9 members attended with guest Tony Emmott helping to boost numbers.
Two members brought their own woods. David Burrows showed his prowess gained over many years by thrashing the competion - even playing left handed to try to balance out the inequality. John Barrow on the other hand showed how 20 years of not playing the game when combined with advancing years can have a significant downward effect on ability.
Although it was claimed to be a friendly match Barrie Birch called for the tape measure to be produced to measure the distance to the jack from opposing woods. Age showed generally though with quite a few woods bounced down the green rather than being rolled from a lower level. Meanwhile Geoff and Mike remained in the club house passing disparaging comments like Statler and Waldorf in the Muppets.
Derek had provided a lunch of sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls followed by lemon drizzle cake and chocolate biscuits. A very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all.
