Handover to President 2025/26 [Start of Meeting] + Speaker

Wed, Jul 2nd 2025 at 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Speaker Finder Barrie Birch showed parts of a video he had entitled Chatsworth House part of the series Treasure Houses of Britain., Visitors Host, Grace & Banners Mike Clewes, Cash Desk John Watson

Barrie explained that in his architectural practice he had done some work for one of the daughters of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. This had allowed him to put in a reference for Leslie Gore when he was applying for the position of clerk of works at Bolton Abbey which is part of the property estates of the Devonshires.

When Leslie retired the Devonshires threw a party for him and he kindly invited Barrie and Lynn to that party. Whilst there Barrie had a long conversation with the Duchess - she was advocating more windmills for green energy whereas Barrie felt that making more use of the bore up the river Severn and other tidal currents would be more preferable.

The video, presented by Selina Scott, dealt with the history of Chatsworth. The house was originally built by Bess of Hardwick and the Devonshires have lived there since 1549. The video showed the impact that various generations of the family had on it.
