The Speaker was ill

Roy was ill so the President read some extracts from a book about Bradford. ---- Speaker Finder John Waterhouse, Visitors Host, Grace & Banners John Barrow, Cash Desk & Sergeant at Arms Barrie Birch


The book was "Every Day Bradford" by Martin Greewood  and contains one story for every day of the year, Some of the extracts read out covered: -

  • 3rd February 1825 their was a great celebration of Bishop Blaize with a great procession with over a thousand participants of which over half were woolcombers as Blaize is their patron saint. However 4 month later the woolcombers went on strike, lost the strike and never celebrated the day again.
  • 3rd March 1996 Jonathan Silver held a concert at Salts Mill which incorporated the first showing of some of David Hockney's paintings and also the opening of the Diner.
  • 11th May 1985 was the date of the terrible fire at Bradford City football ground.
  • 9th of August 1965  Ronnie Corbett appeared on Desert Island Discs. Ronnie was the nephew of Harry Corbett the creator of Sooty and Sweep.
  • 26th March 1976 the last trolley bus in Bradford made its final journey.
  • 3rd April 1934 Percy Shaw patented cats after seeing the eyes of a cat on sat on a wall on a foggy night which stopped him driving off the road.
