Mike gave us some details of the work undertaken by Parkinson's Support in Bradford and Shipley. -- Speaker Finder Richard Bishop, Visitors Host, Grace & Banners Barry Smith, Cash Desk & Sergeant at Arms Derek O'Hearne

We had quite a few visitors at the club this week. Firstly there was our Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) candidate George Mullan accompanied by his mum Sue and his sponsor Rtn Terry Edwards from Birstall Luddites. George introduced himself to the club thanking us for our support. He has just finished his GCSE exams and intends to go to Wakefield college to study his A Levels with the hope of finally going to university to study as a doctor.

Mike Scargill (Chair of Parkinson's Support in Bradford and Shipley) was accompanied by Information Officer Michael Leddy, Treasurer Mark Scott and Activities Coordinator Pat Roberts. He talked about the work that they do in the local area as covered by the document that he handed out: -

Other Points raised were: -

  • More than 1,000 people have Parkinson's across the Bradford Metro.
  • The number of people with Parkinson's is increasing including amongst the younger generation and nobody knows why.
  • Symptoms are not limited to tremors in fact some sufferers do not have tremors but rather have stiffness and slowness in thought or movement.
  • Physical and mental exercises help to slow down onset of symptoms.
  • Just running the exercise class costs more than £5,000 p.a.
  • The group do not receive any statutory funding.
