Richard gave us a run down on his working career. He left Bradford Grammar School at aged 15 to go into the family business - wholesalers of sweets and chocolates. The business had been started by his grandfather in the early 20th century. He had worked there on weekends and holidays whilst at school and so was familiar with the set up. He eventually took over from his father as Managing Director. During his time there the business expanded by acquisition of other wholesalers as well as opening up a cash and carry business (see the photographs). He also extended the range getting into wholesaling of tobacco products, soft drinks and snacks such as nuts, crisps and crackers.

He eventually sold the business to a competitor but remained with the business and eventually became chairman of a national wholesaling consortium.
