Speaker Ruth Smith Area Co-ordinator of Arthritis Action

Arthritis Action give hands-on, practical help to combat the pain of arthritis through self-management and lifestyle advice.

Ruth gave an interesting talk about the work of Arthritis Action. She said that there are around 200 different kinds of arthritis and it is not possible to give specific advice that is useful for everybody. However there is general advice which is useful and this is where the support from the local groups can help. These groups used to be physical meetings but like everything else with the pandemic they have had to move online as Zoom meetings.

She stressed that people living with arthritis can do a lot by helping themselves deal with both the physical and mental aspects of the disease. She said that a good diet together with an exercise regime can be very helpful in reducing pain leading to a more positive lifestyle. It is also very important to have a positive outlook as a negative attitude leads to a downward spiral of increased pain and less mobility whereas looking on the bright side helps to get you moving more leading to less pain.

Online Arthritis Action Groups

Arthritis Action Groups are an opportunity for people with arthritis to talk with others and share their tips on how to manage their arthritis and stay active whilst at home, and they actively welcome new attendees. They discuss a variety of self-management techniques. Participants will need to contact them directly for the log in instructions for the meeting, and they have produced ‘How To’ guides for those not familiar with using Zoom.
