Wed, Sep 23rd 2020 at 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

It has been decided to hold meetings by Video Conference until at least the end of September.
John Barrow has volunteered to speak about the Flooding in Holland in 1953.

In January 1953 Holland was devastated by a great flood. John has a video taken at the time and he will show this.

The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm that occurred on 31 January and 1 February 1953. The floods affected the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK.
A combination of a high spring tide and a windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide. This combination of wind and high tide caused water levels of more than 18 ft above normal sea level in some locations. This overwhelmed sea defences and caused extensive flooding. The Netherlands where 20% of the land is below mean sea level was worst affected, recording over 1,800 deaths and widespread property damage. Most of the casualties occurred in the southern province of Zeeland.
