Organised by the Bradford 10 group of Rotary Clubs this event was held at the Bradford City Football Club Banquet Suite on the 6th of March 2007and proved a great success with the participating students.
The task involved the teams building a motor powered vehicle to travel down a simulated pipeline. The Basic task required the vehicle to complete the test track in the shortest possible time, the Intermediate task required the vehicle to drive through some obstructions, and the Advanced vehicle had to clear 6 off 10mm pebbles from the pipeline. Intermediate and Advanced teams also had to make a reversing switch whilst Basic teams simply made an on/off switch.
The simulated pipeline was 2 metres of 112 mm plastic gutter, so that the vehicle travel was visible to all. A starting line was marked 250 mm in from one end and a finish line at the other end. A tunnel was made using an A4 sheet of card taped to the gutter 600 mm from the start and giving 120 mm clearance.
The debris for the Intermediate task was made from the 10mm section wood by cutting 10 mm lengths to give 6 square blocks or using 10mm dice together with a ramp inside the tunnel.
Teams were allowed to make a hand control unit with trailing wires to the vehicle so that they could design and make a switch to enable remote control of the vehicle. This control unit had to include a mechanical switch, which did not mean just touching the battery with a wire held in hands.
The task was designed to be achieved with out the use of glue guns or drills. The intention was that the teams would make reinforcement corners stapled to the wood. They were therefore asked to bring a paper stapler and a hole punch to allow them to use this alternative method.
A stopwatch was required to time the vehicle runs (fastest time for Basic task and a maximum time limit for Intermediate and Advanced).
Winners of the event were: -
