Geoff Nixon

Obituary

Geoff Nixon 1928 – 2023

Geoff Nixon, who has recently died just a few months short of his ninety fifth birthday, was invited to join Rotary in 1987 to fill the vacant Classification of Solicitor. His predecessor had only lasted two years and had never really got involved in the Club, but right from the off Geoff was a regular club attender and participated fully in Club service. For example, working with Dick DeRome, Jack Doyle and others they organised the collection of used clothing and then sold them to the public in John Street market on a Saturday morning. These were fabulous events directly engaging the Club with the Bradford community and whereas Dick was a tough salesman Geoff was more likely to be kind to the obviously cash strapped purchasers. Sometime later he became the partner in crime of Jack Doyle as the pair were dubbed ‘Statler and Waldorf’ the miserable bar stewards at garden parties at Norman and Evelyn Mitchells home and later venues. Never a Club Officer, Geoff was nevertheless International Chair for many years and a regular supporter of fund raising and social events organising the golf days to celebrate the New President’s day and also helping with quiz nights. He was certainly an active Rotarian. More recent members may recall him as the pre drinks lunch partner of Messrs. Doyle and Sharp, but, as I have outlined, there was far more to his Rotary career and he gave service throughout his membership. Age, driving issues and the pandemic put paid to his Rotary membership and the Club recognised all that he had done for us by awarding him Honorary Membership. Geoff was good company, a compassionate man and concerned to uphold the rights of his fellow citizens irrespective of race or creed. I saw all these attributes as our work brought us together for over thirty years both in Rotary and the local Courts. I salute a man who was both a good and well liked citizen and Rotarian.
