ROTAKIDS AT WHITCHURCH PRIMARY SCHOOL RAISE MONEY FOR GUIDE DOGS CYMRU
The Rotakids at Whitchurch Primary invited ‘Guide Dogs Cymru’ to give a presentation to their school about the work they do training young dogs to become guide dogs. The team at Guide Dogs Cymru provides life changing mobility services to adults, children and young people with sight loss throughout Wales. Their dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure people who are blind or partially sighted can enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else by providing them with trained guide dogs. The pupils were inspired by the presentation and particularly enjoyed meeting the guide dogs who came to the school.
Following the meeting the Rotakids discussed various ways of raising money to support the work of Guide Dogs Cymru. After much deliberation they decided to hold a ‘sponsored read’, which will also help improve literacy throughout the school. Sponsor forms were sent out to over 700 pupils, who were asked to get as much support as they could from friends and family.
On 30th June the school hall was transformed into a ‘quiet space’ with soft music playing in the background and large bean bags scattered throughout. The pupils came into the hall in groups at different times with their favourite book and read for a designated time.
By lunchtime all the pupils had completed their reading sessions and the Rotakids started counting the sponsorship money. The staggering amount of £3789.70 was collected and a cheque will now be sent to Guide Dogs Cymru.
A massive thankyou to the Rotakids for organising the event; to the pupils who took part in the sponsored read; to the staff who ensured the morning ran smoothly and, most importantly, to everyone who gave so generously to support the work of Guide Dogs Cymru.
This is the final project carried out by the 2022/23 Rotakids and they were awarded Certificates of Achievement for all their efforts throughout this year.
