The Howard Pannell Memorial Texas Scramble

As well as being a dedicated and conscientious Rotarian,  Howard was an enthusiastic golfer. He was a member of Rochford Hundred Golf Club and also participated in many of our own Rayleigh Mill Rotary Club golf competitions. 

The members of the club, therefore, thought that it would be a fitting tribute to Howard to initiate a competition in his memory.

The inaugural competition was played on Thursday 29th September at the Three Rivers Golf and Country Club in Cold Norton when fifteen Rotary Club members and friends took part in an eighteen-hole Texas Scramble in five teams of three.  On arrival at the venue, the competitors enjoyed the traditional coffee and bacon rolls before setting out on the course. On their return, after completing the course, they indulged in a (again traditional) meal of ham egg and chips before the eagerly awaited results were announced.

The winners on the day, by a narrow margin, were John Fairweather’s team, of John, Keith Mathams and Carl Watson, appropriately named as “Squires”! 

The competition was played in surprisingly good, warm autumnal weather, despite the earlier forecast, with all the competitors agreeing that the light-hearted, fun competition would have been enjoyed by Howard himself and was a fitting tribute to him.
