Don’t throw away that old bike - it could change someone’s life
Another 42 bikes collected brings the total so far to 805 bikes!
Since Jackie Wellman and the members of the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill started collection unwanted and unused bicycles in the Rayleigh and Southend area in 2020 they have been able to collect a huge number of bikes.
Her latest collection on Thursday 30th June brought to total number of bikes collected by her and her helpers over the last two years to an incredible 805.
The bikes are delivered to the charity ReCycle in Colchester where they are dismantled and shipped to South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, and the Gambia where they are refurbished and distributed to areas where there is no rural transport. The bikes will transform lives of those who receive them by decreasing the time young girls take to collect water which enables them to attend school. Helps in transporting goods and so encourages trading and allows recipients to travel to obtain employment. In short, it transforms their lives.
ReCycle also refurbishes the better quality bikes at its Colchester headquarters for sale to the public the proceeds of which are used to defray the cost of shipping the other bikes to Africa.
