Ashby Castle Rotary Club invents a new Olympic sport….one Tom Daley would be proud of !!!
For a couple of years, we have been supporting Bombolulu School in Kenya financially and in other ways. Last year, we collected and sent out much-needed bras and pants, and this year, we had another idea.
We have been knitting squares to create blankets for girls living in a safe house at the school. By WE, I mean our organisers, Jayne Knight and Sylvia Williams, have liaised with Ashby Caste Rotary club members, family and friends, Ashby WI, Ashby Knit and Natter (Browns Court), Hartshorne Knit and Natter, Cadley View Care Home, and Springfields residents.
We are truly grateful to everyone who gave up their precious time to knit squares for the young, vulnerable girls. Each blanket needed 96 squares, and people took this to heart and wanted to help others while enjoying their own hobby… “a sense of purpose,” some said.
We aimed for 12 blankets but have surpassed this with style. We have completed 25 blankets, 11 of which are currently assembled, and 13 waiting to be crocheted together. Putting the squares together is a mammoth task, so anyone who fancies helping out, please contact us. All blankets will go with a letter to say who produced them, and ALL will certainly be used by the school.
This project is an excellent example of how the local community has pulled together, doing something they enjoy, to help our Rotary Club and the girls at Bombolulu School.
