What is RYLA? ( Rotary Youth Leadership Award)
As the title suggests, RYLA is a youth leadership course run by Rotary in District 1040 as part of a wider Rotary initiative. The course is for young people (ages 16 and 17) who have demonstrated leadership potential within their school or community. Participating Rotary Clubs, such as Ripon Rowels, select awardees from a wide background of abilities and social levels.

Where does it all happen?
The course takes place over six days at Hebden Hey scout hostel in Hebden Bridge. On arrival awardees are shown to their accommodation, introduced to the staff and shown round the centre before being placed into a group of eight like minded individuals with whom they spend the week. Each group also has a mentor who plays a vital part in each awardees development over the course.
Who is selected?
The short answer is that there is no particular type of person. Indeed, the success of the course depends on there being a good mix of different backgrounds and experience, all with leadership potential. The commitment and determination by the participants to succeed is most impressive. The course is also designed to develop the latent talents of anyone held back by lack of confidence. Candidates must be prepared to contribute to as well as benefit from the course and preference will be given to those who would not otherwise get the opportunity to take part in such an award scheme.
How much does it cost?
There is no cost to awardees. Candidates are fully sponsored by The Rotary Club of Ripon Rowels.
What to do next?
If you are interested in attending a RYLA course, please contact Mr V Kane, Ripon Rowels Rotary Club on 01765 606248 or email inforotaryrr@gmail.com.
