Liz Johnson, President – St Agnes & St Piran Rotary Club sends this report....."At long last our report on our most enjoyable walk along the glorious Cornish coast from Perranporth to Porthtowan on Sunday 16 August.  Our sponsorship total is in the region of£1232.00.  Some are waiting or cheques to be posted to them rom out of County.  We are paying it all into our Rotary account and Bob Chudleigh,  our Treasurer, will transfer it over.

Much to everyone’s relief the weather was pleasant but not sweltering as it has been at times recently.

Club members agreed to walk or sponsor and we managed to have six walkers and an efficient support team.  Colin Brewer, one of our walking wounded members, collected two of our team from home and delivered them to the assembly point.  We were then put under starters order at ten prompt by Colin and our Senior Rotarian Roger Tonkin.  Roger was stood down for this event as he threw himself out of an aeroplane last year for charity.

We set off at a good pace and managed not to be lapped by the canoeists and paddle boarders heading in the same direction down on the water.  We arrived at St Agnes where Trevor, my Husband, and my sister were waiting with water and encouragement.  After a short break we got underway again – having covered five and a half miles of an expected eight mile walk we were quite buoyant that we would have the walk done in record time and be enjoying  refreshments in Betty’s garden – our only Porthtowan Club member.

This was not to be as the alleged eight mile jaunt was as the crow flies – the reality was twelve and a half miles!  The weather continued to be kind to us – we had a few pit stops when people happened along that members knew – and one even managed to get s sponsor along the way.  One twisted knee and a case of cramp later we were nearing Porthtowan.  No need to ring Trevor to call out emergency services or to use the map that Tom Pitchard had so caerfully prepared with all relevant grid references and contact details.

Trevor walked up the steep path at Porthtowan to meet us – not stopping for a breather as he was in full view of Betty and his Sister-in-Law and didn’t want to let the men down!  We all completed the walk at two forty and all agreed that it had been well worth the effort and such a relief ito actually be taking part in a Rotary event – even with social distancing.  So a wholehearted thank you to Boscawen for coming up with a brilliant idea to get us all back to Rotary action – instead of Zoom meetings in isolation – and can we do more joint ventures in the future."
