Youth Speaks 2014-2015: competition for local juniors

Once again, this year's competition, held at Kea School, was of a very high standard. The school hall was full of parents and supporters. Seven teams took part, with the first and second progressing to the mid-Cornwall Area heat on 10 February.
The usual stalwart schools took part and the Club is grateful to them for making this another event to remember. Club members who have never previously witnessed the competition continue to be impressed by the standards of thought and presentation the children unfailingly attain. The choice of topics (shown below) was wide-ranging, and each handled informatively and with appropriate humour. The questions were uniformly handled well.
The winning team came from Devoran School. Each member of the team played a strong part, showing how important teamwork is in this event. Their topic , "Take only memories; leave only footprints", strongly described the rubbish that is left especially on Mt Everest and other world heritage sites.
The team from Kea came second in this round, arguing the case that payments to charity should be compulsory!
Both teams go forward to compete in the central area round of the competition at St Columb Minor Church on 10 February.
We hope they will both progress to the District 1290 Junior Final, to be held at the Holiday Inn in Plymouth as part of the District Conference programme on 28 February.
The Club is indebted to the judges (David Hughes of Anderson Lloyd LLP, Carole Allen, and Helen Sandle-Baker) who found it hard to choose between the teams. As usual, David's adjudication and comments on each speaker were helpful and well received.
Special thanks are due to hosts Kea Community Primary School (to Head Teacher Katherine Warren, to Sharon, and to Hannah who provided refreshments during the event), and to the timekeepers and assistants from the Rotary Club.

Young Chef 2018-2019 at Richard Lander School
more Contestants cooked for 2 courses for one person in a limited time. They had to show their costings, meal plan, and menu to the judges. While they were cooking, Lee Trewhela did a live Facebook Stream and chatted to them on Cornwall Live/Facebook.
