A message from the Organising Committee;
On behalf of the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Southport Links, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Southport in 2008. As many of you will know, in 2001 we hosted the international tournament in Liverpool which proved to be very successful both for the IGFR and for our Rotary Club. We now want to extend our welcome to the Rotarians of the European Fellowship so that they, too, may enjoy our wonderful golf courses and hospitality. These championships are again being organised by Rotarians for Rotarians.
Southport is ideally located on England's 'golf coast' where we are fortunate in having some of the finest golf courses in the world. Royal Birkdale plays host to the 2008 'Open' championship. Some 30 miles (50km) to the south lies Royal Liverpool, host to the 2006 'Open', and just the same distance to the north is Royal Lytham which was host to the 2001 'Open'. In addition, there is Formby which was the venue for the 2004 Curtis Cup. The courses of Hesketh, Southport & Ainsdale and West Lancashire which have been selected for you are all championship courses; all have hosted the final 'Open' qualifying rounds, as well as holding many other prestigious golfing events. West Lancashire and Formby together will host the Amateur Chamoionship in 2009. You will see that there is a feast of golf in store for you!
We have not forgotten the non-golfers, of course. There will be many events organised in and around Southport which is situated close to Liverpool, the European City of culture in 2008.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 34th European Championships in September 2008.
Yours in Rotary Fellowship,
John A. Bambery
