Members of The Rotary Club of Southport Links were invited to view the new recuperation pods at Altcar Training camp. Members were shown the facilities by Lt COL (Retd) Gordon Black NW RFCA. The Pods are situated on the camp and consist of several wooden pods, as are often seen in Glamping sites, along with a workshop, ablutions block and reception area. The objective is to give injured ex military personnel somewhere they can stay for a break, in familiar surroundings, completely free of charge to them, to enable them to recuperate from their injuries. The ablutions block contain shower wet rooms designed for ease of use by amputees, and the workshop will contain wood and metal working facilities to enable the residents make and mend items. The camp consists of several areas of woodland, a large stretch of beach, which is home to a wide variety of wildlife – herons, pheasants and other birds were noticed on our visit. There is also easy access to the local railway station for trips to Southport or Liverpool. The facilities were funded totally by contributions from the public – both cash donations and in time by tradesman. The pods are due to be officially opened on June 1st, and look to be a superb addition to the after service support that is so necessary today.
