Before tonights' meeting got underway, Past President and Senior Rotarian Bob Watson took the floor to celebrate his and wife Joyce's 60th Wedding Anniverary, Bob had put a glass on the table for all present to mark the event. During his short address Bob reflected on his success by ignoring the 3 c's rule ( Compromise, Compromise, Compromise) but utilising the CCGI rule (Compromise, Compromise, Give Up)!! Those present gave a huge cheers to wish Bob and Joyce well.
President Ivor then got the meeting underway with a presentation of the chain of office of the Vice President to Peter Williams who had been away from town on handover night.
Ivor then thanked Rotarian Bob Duncan for the super Boules and BBQ afternoon he hosted on Sunday, Ivor commented on Bob's excellent delegation and asked Bob to take the Club's thanks to Marjorie and daughter and husband Sally and Mike and the full team of assistant grandchildren.
Alasdair McPherson presented a cheque for £7,200 to Lyndsay Stobie the community fundraiser for CHAS, this was the funds raised by the Duck Race. Alasdair expressed his thanks to the local community for supporting the Duck Race and Lyndsay thanked the Club for the continued support.
President Ivor now introduced Rotarian Chris Hill whose talk took the Club on a journey from Hitchin as a boy to Dunblane as a Rotarian via many elite learning institutions as he aquired the tools of his trade as a development chemist.
Chris introduced his family and wife Frances who has been the rock of the family through his journey.
Chris told the Club of his moves through senior positions with several well known drug companies and his efforts mentoring children and young adults to have an interest in chemistry. It was clear from Chris's presentation and the way in which he handled the many questions from the floor that his interpersonal skills had been a big factor in his success.
Chris reflected briefly on his time with the Rotary Club in a short sonnet which the Club thought amusing but that he should probably stick to just being a thoroughly good guy!
John Kilby gave the vote of thanks noting that he and many other Members of the Club had failed their A level chemistry!!!! The Club gave a hearty round of applause.
Chris then offered to speak at a meeting later in the year to help deepen Members understanding of chemistry.
