Am-Am: 2022
Thursday saw the return for the 36th time of the Bridge of Allan and Dunblane Rotary Club’s annual Am-Am golf competition, held, by kind permission of the Directors, at the Dunblane New Golf Club. The competition raises much needed funds for Strathcarron Hospice, with a total last year reaching in excess of £25,000. Enthusiasm for the event has never waned, and this year was no exception with 47 teams of four players entering the competition. Many of the teams travelled considerable distances, with the four teams from Oban as ever being particularly welcome visitors. The event was blessed with excellent weather, with sunshine and a light breeze thoughout the day creating pretty well perfect conditions for golf.
Early start competitors, and the Rotary team setting up the arrangements, both had a 7.30 am start, while those at the other end of the day were not finishing until shortly after 8.30 pm – a long day, but very much one that competitors found enjoyable. One competitor commented: ‘We were really lucky to have such lovely weather, and the course was in great condition – no excuses available for a low score’.
When the results finally emerged, there was a very close outcome for the Team Prize, with the Marshall Construction team of Gordon Boal, Brian McDermot, Andrew MacRoberts and Gordon MacRoberts winning by the narrowest of margins. The Tom and Gerry plus Two team, Tom Regan, Tom Allan, Gerry Dunion and Alex Sneddon, were disappointed, being only one point behind Marshall Construction. However, there was compensation for them by way of winning the Yellow Ball competition. The top female competitor was Anne Gardner; the top male was Alan Rankin, who took the Fourways Trophy. For many of those who were unlucky on this occasion in the major events, there was compensation in the form of a number ballot prizes.
In addition to competitors and Rotarians, the success of the event is hugely reliant on a wide range of sponsors. Rotarian Kenneth Murray, Rotary Club Hospice Committee Chairperson, acknowledged the very many local businesses and individuals who contributed generously. ‘Once again’, he said, ‘we are extremely grateful to all who have supported the event in this way. In particular, I wish to say a very big thank you to lumiraDx, a medical services company whose products are being used in many countries across the world. LumiraDx has again been an exceptionally generous supporter. As ever, we are also extremely grateful to Dunblane New Golf Club for making the course available to us at no charge.’
