See what Rotary is doing to eradicate polio across the world
Polio Plus
Rotary International has pioneered efforts to eradicate polio over 30 years ago and since then, the formation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative which consists of Rotary, UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Gates Foundation, has helped the incidence of polio plummet by more than 99.9%.
The UK has been free from polio since the 1980’s but local Rotary Clubs continue to strive to raise awareness and Rotary Internationals aim is to finally eradicate polio across the world once and for all.
To help raise awareness Redcar Rotary has provided purple crocus corms to local organisations for the last 5 years. Every February you will see patches of these crocuses growing around Redcar. In 2019 in conjunction with Redcar Golf Club we planted 5000 corms on the mound by the entrance to the club. As you drive along Majuba Road you can see the crocuses spelling out Rotary’s aim to END POLIO NOW emblazoned in purple.
