Helder & Alan present Dictionaries 4 Life to I & F Junior School
February 2017
Rotarian Alan Pudney recently presented dictionaries to 6th year pupils at Ingatestone & Mountnessing Junior Schools.
Summer 2013
With the ending of the school year our Rotary Club, for the fourth year running had the great satisfaction of giving the Year Six students at our local schools Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries. These are magnificent tomes which are donated by us to the pupils who are leaving their junior school and will be starting a very different academic life at their new senior school.
Peter Philips and Roger Harste very kindly presented 47 books to Ingatestone Junior School, and Neil Macalister and David Goodman presented The Mountnessing year six with 13 dictionaries whilst David Fincham and Andrew Clarkson were at Margaretting school giving out 10 books.
Neil Taggart, Head Teacher of the Ingatestone Junior School, has asked if we could give the dictionaries out at the beginning of the year six, as this will give the students time to become familiar with the books. We think this is an excellent suggestion and we hope the other two schools will adopt the same procedure.
Kelvedon Hatch and Villages have also given about 40 dictionaries to the local leaving students and are expecting to give out further books in September this year.
The move to a September distribution will have the added benefit, from a Rotary point of view, of the students not being submerged with the many other "presents" they receive at their year end."
The presenting of dictionaries has given Rotary an 'intro' to our local schools and has also helped with another Rotary Project being 'Life Education'.

By using dictionaries efficiently, children explore spellings, meanings and derivations for example by using alphabetical order, abbreviations and definitions with understanding. They promote books and
the printed word and should help children with their homework in secondary education.
In some homes it may also form a reference work for all the family. The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary 4 Life comprises 1,000 illustrations, 10,000 entries and 20,000 definitions printed in full colour on leaflet grade paper from a sustainable forest and contains 288 pages.
