The speaker at this year’s Rotary Club of Dunmow, Sports Personality Dinner was Alvin Martin, ex West Ham and England International footballer.
Alvin spoke of many memorable moments throughout his career, but in particular one for which he is now famous. This is that he scored a hat-trick in a single game against three different goal keepers. The game took place in April 1986 and was against Newcastle United, which West Ham won 8 - 1, three of the eight goals being scored by Alvin. Unfortunately Newcastle United had to use three different goalkeepers during this game due to injuries.
From Alvin’s unique hat-trick he donated a framed and numbered certificate commemorating the event, which he then auctioned. This was one of three items auctioned at the dinner, the others being a cricket bat signed by the current Essex County cricket team, and a framed painting representing West Ham.
All the money raised at this year’s dinner was in aid of SportsAid and Rotary Charities. The Rotary Club of Dunmow has supported SportsAid Eastern for many years, who provide support for our young sports personalities, including local BMX cyclist Bethany Shriever.
The dinner was attended by just over 80 people, including Dunmow Town Mayor Patrick Levelle, pictured with Alvin Martin, Colin Bradley, Rotary Club of Dunmow President, and Richard Harris, Dunmow Rotarian and Master of Ceremonies for the dinner.
