World Polio Day
To mark World Polio day on Saturday 24th October, members of the Rotary Club of Dunmow planted several hundred purple crocus bulbs around the trees lining The Downs in Dunmow. The purple colour of the crocus bulbs planted is symbolic of the campaign to eradicate polio.
The eradication of polio has been the major global project of Rotary since 1985 and another great milestone was reached in 2020 when Nigeria was declared polio free. This means more than 90% of the world’s population is now free of the disease. It is important to continue with routine immunisation in order to stop the poliovirus from returning and in this, Rotary has a critical role to play. Polio is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan so there is still much work to be done.
Member of Rotary clubs around the world, including those in Dunmow, have raised enormous sums which have allowed Rotary to issue grants to fund polio surveillance, transportation, awareness campaigns and National Immunisation Days. In addition, Rotarians have provided basic items that are taken for granted here to improve sanitation such as soap and health kits. These have made an enormous difference.
